PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a roll for hot rolling in which the remarkable reduction of the consumption unit of the roll and the remarkable increase of rolling reduction can jointly be attained by reducing the consumption (wear amt. + required amt. to be ground) per use and suppressing the generation of micro-pitlike surface roughness at the time of expanding the rolling reduction. SOLUTION: A ferrous alloy composing a barrel surface layer part in contact with a rolling stock has a compsn. contg., by weight, 1.5 to 2.5% C, <=1.2% Si, <=1.2% Mn, >5.5% Cr, <3.0% Mo, 4.0 to 6.0% V, >5.5% W and <4.5% Co and also satisfying both the following inequalities I and II: the inequality I: Cr+2Mo+2V+W>=24%, and the inequality II: C+0.47V+0.04Cr+0.13(Mo+ W)<6.6%. Not only it is excellent in wear resistance and surface roughening resistance, but also the required amt. to be ground at the time of reusing can be reduced.
