PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low-viscosity smectic liquid crystal composition which has a high contrast, is stable at a high temperature, and has a viscosity almost independent of temperature by incorporating four specific compounds into the same. SOLUTION: At least one compound represented by formula IV in an amount of 10-50 wt.% is incorporated into a mixture which comprises at least one compound represented by formula I and at least one compound represented by formula II or III in a wt. ratio of (5:1)-(5:6). In formula I, R1 is a 1-16C alkyl or alkoxy group provided that compounds having 5-12C alkyl groups or 7-14C alkoxy groups account for 50-100 wt.% of the compounds represented by formula I. In formula II, R2 and R3 are each 1-16C alkyl or alkoxy provided that the sum of the numbers of carbon atoms of R2 and R3 is 17 or lower and that 50-100 wt.% of the compounds represented by formula II is accounted for by the compounds which has 5-8C alkyl or alkoxy group; of which R2 and R3 are not simultaneously an alkyl chain; and of which the sum of the numbers of carbon atoms of R2 and R3 is 13 or lower. In formula III, R4 is 1-16C alkyl; and R5 is 1-6C alkoxy provided that the sum of the numbers of carbon atoms of R4 and R5 is 17 or lower and that 50-100 wt.% of the compounds represented by formula III are accounted for by compounds of which R4 is 4-8C alkyl; R5 is 4-8C alkoxy; and the sum of the numbers of carbon atoms of R4 and R5 is 13 or lower. In formula IV, R6 is 4-8C alkyl; A is 1,4-phenylere or the like; and X is a single bond or the like.
