PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve insulation easily and surely when patterning electrodes. SOLUTION: This organic EL(electroluminescence) element 1 composed by layering an organic layer 5 including a luminous layer between a positive electrode 3 and negative electrodes 6 is equipped with a plurality of pairs of insulating ribs 9, each pair being formed on the positive electrode 3 or close to the positive electrode 3 and juxtaposed at a fixed distance H in each of isolating positions for insulatingly isolating the positive electrode 3 into two or more. Since each pair of ribs 9 cuts an evaporated negative electrode material with the distance H, the insulating property is improved between the negative electrodes 6 situated in areas on both sides of each of the juxtaposed ribs 9. Since the distance H insulates the negative electrodes 6 from each other, the insulation can be achieved surely and easily without using ribs too high to form or oblique evaporation from the lateral side of ribs 9. Since evaporation can be performed substantially from right above the rib 9 without using the oblique evaporation from the lateral side of ribs 9, flexibility can be increased in the disposition of the ribs 9 or in a pattern of the negative electrodes 6.
