摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve contrast characteristics of transmission display by controlling the polarized state of light emitting from a liquid crystal layer to a first polarizing plate in a dark display state to be same both for reflection display and transmission display. SOLUTION: In a dark display state, the light entering the top face of a liquid crystal cell is transmitted through a liquid crystal layer and reflected by a semitransmitting reflection film 123 so that the light is changed into circularly polarized light or elliptically polarized light in a specified rotation direction. On the other hand, the light entering the back face of the liquid crystal cell is changed into light having a specified rotation direction of polarization by the optical device, namely, in the same rotation direction as that of the light entering the top face and reflected by the semitransmitting reflection film 123, and is transmitted through the semitransmitting reflection film 123. Namely, the polarized state of the light emitted from the liquid crystal layer to a first polarizing plate in a dark display state is same or almost same in both of reflection display and transmission display, and therefore, decrease in contrast in transmission display due to the difference in the polarized state between two kinds of display can be prevented.
