PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a product having good reaction rate through a simple arrangement by providing a resisting section for disturbing and stirring linear downward flow of powder and particles in a furnace where heat exchange and reaction take place with a gas of specified composition introduced into the furnace during a machining process where the powder and particles descend in the furnace. SOLUTION: In a shaft furnace 1 having an opening 2 for throwing micro powder and particles P from a chute 4, a resisting section is constructed by arranging a plurality of stainless steel hollow pipes 5 penetrating the shaft furnace 1 in the horizontal direction while staggering in the vertical direction. Such a shaft furnace 1 is sectioned into an uppermost drying/preheating zone 6, an intermediate preliminary reducing zone 7, and a lowermost reducing/ carbonizing zone 8 and gases being supplied to respective zones 6-8 are circulated through first through third circulation passages 9-11. Heat exchange and reaction take place between the gases and the powder and particles P in respective zones 6-8 and iron ore, for example, thrown into the furnace is discharged as iron carbide while enhancing the processing efficiency through existence of the resisting section 5.
