PHENOXAZONE COMPOUND, ITS PREPARATION, AND ORGANIC ELECTROLUMINESCENT ELEMENT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a phenoxazone compound improved in luminance, fastness, and emission efficiency by reacting an o-nitrosophenol derivative (salt) with a naphthol compound. SOLUTION: An o-nitrosophenol derivative (salt) of formula I is reacted with a naphthol compound of formula II in an inert solvent at 50-300 deg.C for 0.5-48 hr to give a phenoxazone compound of formula III. In the case of a compound of which n is 1 and R is other than H, a phenoxazone compound of formula IV wherein R' is hydroxyl is reacted with an alkylating agent in an amount of 0.9-10 mol per mol of the phenoxazone compound of formula IV in the presence of a base at 20-300 deg.C for 0.5-48 hr, thus giving a phenoxazone compound of formula VI comprising a phenoxazone compound of formula V. In the formulas, R is H or optionally substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl; R1 to R4 are each H or alkyl provided at least one of them is alkyl; (n) is 0 or 1; R" is optionally substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl; and R' is H or hydroxyl.
