PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the number of display colors per screen without increasing the bit width of a pixel code, that is, without increasing the reading time of a picture memory in a display controller which conducts a color display by using color pallets. SOLUTION: This controller is provided with plural color pallets (103 to 106) and a color pallet selecting circuit 107 which is provided to select a color pallet to be used depending on a display area, i.e., a different color pallet is used depending on a display area. Thus, the number of display colors per screen is increased without increasing the bit width of a pixel code, that is, without increasing a reading time of a picture memory 102.
