PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a uniform display quality without causing any irregular brightness caused by stress in a laminated structure with a polarizing plate and a liquid crystal panel by specifying the photoelastic coefft. of phase difference compensation device disposed between a polarizing device and a liquid crystal cell. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device 100 has a liquid crystal cell 40, polarizing plates 42, 44 being a pair of polarizers holding the liquid crystal cell 40, and phase difference compensation devices 46, 48 disposed between the liquid crystal cell 40 and the polarizing plates 42, 44. The phase difference compensation device used has <=10×10-13 cm2/dyne photoelastic coefft. Thereby, the occurrence of irregular polarization can be suppressed in a laminated structure with polarizing plates or a laminated structure of an integrated body of the polarizing plates and phase difference compensation devices on the liquid crystal cell surface, an uniform display quality can be obtd. Further, it is preferable that the principal refractive indices nx, ny in the plane parallel to the surface of the liquid crystal cell and the principal refractive index nz in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal cell satisfy the relation of nz<ny<nx. |
