PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-soluble melt-spun fiber of polyvinyl alcohol. SOLUTION: This water-soluble thermoplastic fiber is composed of (A) 100 pts.wt. of anα-olefin-modified polyvinyl alcohol, having a degree of polymerization of 200 to 500, degree of saponification of 90 to 99.99 mol%, molar fraction of the central hydroxy group of 70 to 99.9 mol% in the 3 hydroxy groups connected in series, as a triad to the vinyl alcohol unit, and melting point of 160 to 230 deg.C, and (B) 0.0003 to 1 pt.wt. of an alkaline metallic ion, and substantially has grooves, 0.5μm or more in length, extending in the longitudinal direction on the surfaces.
