A backup pad for an abrasive disk comprises a circular compressible pad 1 having a first surface adapted for attachment to an abrasive disk and a second surface laminated to a relatively rigid support member 4 with an axially amounted means 7 for attachment to a rotary grinder. Circular compressible pad 1 is provided with from three to six gaps 2 in its circumference space around the circumference of the pad, penetrating from 10 to 50% of the radius of the pad. Relatively rigid support member 4 has a similar shape and dimensions to compressible pad 1 except that a segment 5 is removed from at least a portion of the circumference of support member 4 between gaps 2 such that pad 1 extends radially beyond support member 4 in the vicinity of such removed segments 5.
