PURPOSE: Provided are recombinant or substantially pure preparations of H. pylori polypeptides and the nucleic acids encoding the polypeptides which are useful for diagnostics and vaccine compositions. CONSTITUTION: A nucleic acids and peptides have utility for diagnostic and therapeutics for H. pylori and other Helicobacter species. They can also be used to detect the presence of H. pylori and other Helicobacter species in a sample; and for use in screening compounds for the ability to interfere with the H. pylori life cycle or to inhibit H. pylori infection. More specifically, this invention features compositions of nucleic acids corresponding to entire coding sequences of H. pylori proteins, including surface or secreted proteins or parts thereof, nucleic acids capable of binding mRNA from H. pylori proteins to block protein translation, and methods for producing H. pylori proteins or parts thereof using peptide synthesis and recombinant DNA techniques. This invention also features antibodies and nucleic acids useful as probes to detect H. pylori infection.
