The alkoxyamines (I) are new and are prepared by an atom transfer radical addition reaction in which a carbonated radical is generated from a halogenated derivative in the presence of an organo-metallic system and reacts with the beta-phosphorus nitroxide. Alkoxyamine derivatives of formula (I) are new. R<1>, R<2> = hydrogen (H), 1-10C alkyl, aryl, 1-10C aralkyl; or R<1>+R<2> = a 3-8C ring; R<3> = 1-30C optionally unsaturated hydrocarbyl, which may include at least one ring; R<4>, R<5> = alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, aralkyloxy, perfluoroalkyl, aralkyl or thioalkyl (all 1-20C); R<4>+R<5> = a 2-6C P-containing ring which may contain one or more O or S atoms; Z = -(CF2)5CF3, -C(CN)(CH3)2 or -C(R<6>)(R<7>)(R<8>); R<6>, R<7>, R<8> = H, CN, 3-12C cycloalkyl or -(CH2)nC(O)OR<9>; R<9> = 1 - 6C alkyl; and n = 0-6. An Independent claim is included for the use of alkoxylamine derivatives of formula (IA) as initiators for radical (co)polymerization reactions. Z' = (CF2)5CF3, 3-12C cycloalkyl or CR<6>'R<7>'R<8>'; R<6>', R<7>', R<8>' = H, 1-10C alkyl, phenyl, benzyl, cyano, 3-12C cycloalkyl or (CH2)nCOOR<9>. All other variables are as defined for (I).
