A method of softening water, comprising the steps of increasing the iron concentration of the water, and then softening the water using a magnetic or alternating current electrical water softening device. A water softening system (2) comprises an electrical or magnetic water softening device (4) attached to a water supply (8) at a first location, and dosing means (6) attached to said water supply at a second location upstream of said first location for increasing the concentration of iron in the water reaching said water softening device (4). |
