PURPOSE: An image processing apparatus and an image processing method are provided to achieve an improved color presentation performance while allowing a high speed color palette switching to be performed without adding a load to an CPU. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a graphic data reading block(11) for reading out picture data stored in a memory(3), isolating color palette storage address and palette number data from the picture data, outputting the color palette storage address, and temporarily storing the output palette number data; a color palette storage address register(12) for temporarily storing the color palette storage address output from the graphic data reading block(11); and a color palette storage/control block(13) for temporarily storing a color palette selectively obtained from a plurality of color palettes stored in the memory(3), reading the color data corresponding to the temporarily stored color palette being based on the palette number data output from the graphic data reading block(11), and outputting the color data.
