The car is driven by pedals connected to the rear wheels and has an auxiliary compressed air drive in the form of a single cylinder/pump (3) connected to a compressed air tank (2). With the wheels raised off the ground by a brake shoe the pedals are used to compress air and fill the tank. Then, with the brake disengaged, the car can be driven by the pedals alone, by a combination of pedalling and compressed air, or by compressed air alone. A switch allows the compressed air to be used to drive the rear wheels via a freewheel mechanism or, if necessary, to be released into the atmosphere.
