The beams (1) may be cut from logs to a square or rectangular section. They also may have interdigitating tongue-and-groove shapes in their top (4) and bottom (5) surfaces. The vertical splits (3) in each beam have tapered ends and are filled with thermal insulating material (2), and open up onto the top and bottom surfaces. There may be two splits end-to-end in each beam. More elaborate arrangements may be used, with several slits filed with insulation, side-by-side.
