This invention concerns an internal combustion engine (11) comprising a cylinder block (12) with at least one cylinder bore (13) defined therein, a piston (14) reciprocating in said cylinder bore, a cylinder head (17) affixed to said cylinder block (12) and enclosing said cylinder bore (13) each of said piston and said cylinder head (17) having a combustion chamber surface defining a combustion chamber, and an intake passage arrangement (22-28) and an exhaust passage arrangement (55-58) with a plurality of intake valves (31,32,33) and exhaust valves (61) associated therewith. The engine is improved in that the combustion chamber surfaces of the cylinder head (17) and the piston (14) are shaped substantially concave, thus defining a lens shaped combustion chamber when the piston (14) is at its top dead center position. According to a preferred embodiment, a valve timing device is provided for varying the timing of the intake valves (31,32,33) and /or the exhaust valves (61). <IMAGE> |
