The testing method uses an indentor (2) mechanically impacting on the surface of a tested workpiece (1), with detection of the mechanical characteristics of the latter via measurement of the acoustic characteristics within the impact zone, e.g. the acoustic emission for detection of the penetration depth and/or loading of the indentor. An Independent claim for a non-destructive testing device for mechanical workpiece characteristics is also included.
