The combustion chamber (2) is filled from both sides with compressor air from a compression chamber (1). An air inlet valve (3) is mounted on the compressor side and an air curtain (12) closes the chamber on the engine side. The compressed air flows centripetally from the outer periphery of the combustion chamber casing to through a nozzle (4) between the end of the chamber and the entry to the combustion gas tapping (7). An air curtain formed on a longitudinal body (8) in the centre encounters the ignition device (9), whereby part of the air passes to the combustion chamber and part to the exhaust gas tapping. Fuel is introduced into the chamber on the valve side, the fuel-air mixture is ignited by the ignition device in the central body and the explosion pressure causes the valve to close, the exhaust gases break through the air curtain into the exhaust gas tapping, the valve opens again and the air curtain closes the chamber for the next working cycle. An Independent claim is also included for a method of starting and loading a combustion chamber with a cyclical combustion.
