A balloon catheter (10) with stent placement recess (32) generally comprises a catheter shaft (16) with a recess (32) defined by an elongate base (34), and sides (36) that are substantially perpendicular to the base (34). The sides (36) of the recess (32) extend between the elongate base (34) and the outer diameter of the catheter shaft (16). An inflatable balloon (20) is secured to the catheter shaft (16), and is maintained within the recess (32) when not inflated. A stent (22), wrapped about the balloon (20), is also maintained within the recess (32) when the balloon (20) is not inflated. The recess (32) within the catheter shaft (16), its ability to maintain the balloon (20), the stent (22) prevents slipping of the stent (22) relative to the balloon (20), and thus, improper placement of the stent (22) within the vasculature. The recess (32) also maintains the slim profile of the catheter shaft (16), prevents unwanted stretching, and tearing of the vasculature by the catheter (10) prior to stent (22) placement. |
