The invention relates to the utilization of 5-aminolevulinic acid or a derivative thereof in the production of a pharmaceutical preparation for photodynamic diagnosis and/or photodynamic therapy. This phenomenon is based on a dose of 5-aminolevulinic acid and the formation of photosensitive protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) induced thereby. 5-aminolevulinic acid is a precursor for photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX so that the amount of protoporphyrin IX can be increased by administering said precursor. The precursor in not concentrated by the healthy tissue and is converted into PPIX. The invention also relates to a light application unit for combined photodynamic diagnosis and/or photodynamic therapy and to a device for applying a pharmaceutical preparation.
