<p>A modular apparatus (10) for supporting and guiding a tool such as an ultra-high pressure water jet along a ship hull (14) or other work surface, including a motorized lift vehicle (16) and a contour following assembly (18) with a gimbals assembly (30), an instrument carriage assembly (32), a positioning assembly (46) that urges gimbals assembly (30) and instrument carriage assembly (32) against the work surface. Optionally, a hydraulic, mechanical, or pneumatic pressure system (80) applies pressure to positioning assembly (46). A scissors lift (38), hydraulic lift, telescoping arm, or other suitable device raises and lower apparatus (10). In operation, gimbals assembly (30) and positioning assembly (46) cooperate to maintain instrument carriage assembly (32) in a user-selected position with respect to the work surface. Depending on the type of tool selected, apparatus (10) may be used for cleaning or stripping surface coatings, buffing, painting, washing, and so forth. Apparatus (10) is mobile, compact, cost-effective, and can be operated by a single operator.</p> |
