In a process to oxygenate and nitrify process water used in aquaculture, the process water flows especially down through a reactor bed in which oxygen is directly dispersed. The rate at which oxygen is released is sufficient both to nitrify the ammonia and oxygenate the water to the target value. The empty pipe flow speed of the water in the reactor is greater than 80 m/h.
