In an air cushion restraint device for motor vehicles, consisting of a constructional unit which comprises the air cushion (3), the gas generator (2) and a housing which holds the air cushion (3) and the gas generator (2) and can be installed concealed behind an outlet opening attached in the front part of the passenger compartment, in order to protect the air cushion (3), the opening of the housing is closed by means of a film (4) which is applied to the outside of the housing.
