摘要 783,558. Laminates; fabrics composed of threads united by adhesives. KIMBERLYCLARK CORPORATION. April 5, 1955 [Sept. 30, 1954], No. 9999/55. Classes 96 and 140. [Also in Group XIV] A laminated material suitable as a wiping material or for aprons, bibs, mats, pads and towels comprises a fibrous layer which tends to disintegrate under rubbing or wiping action with protective grilles of mutually crossing elements overlying and adhered to its opposite faces, permitting direct engagement of the fibrous layer with a surface to be wiped. The fibrous layer may consist of fibrous batting, or a number of plies of crepe tissue paper or cellulose wadding bonded together in spaced areas, and, if desired covered on both sides with a thin fibrous layer, or may comprise cellulosic fluff between layers of crepe tissue paper. The grille may be a cross-laid thread web made by passing threads 1, Fig. 8, over a roller 3 dipping in adhesive and grooved or rotated slowly so as to apply adhesive at spaced intervals, leading the adhesive-coated threads, if desired after partial drying, through a guide 6 which guides them into circumferentially spaced arrangement over a cylindrical mandrel 5, wrapping threads 2 from spools 8 on a rotating ring 7 around the threads 1 as they pass along the mandrel 5, and slitting the resulting tube with a rotating knife 10 to form a fabric web. The fabric web may be coated with loose fibres 18, Fig. 9, which are caused to adhere by hot-calendering as at 20, and may then have applied to it a web 36 comprising the desired number of layers of crepe tissue paper or of fluff and tissue paper. Another cross-laid thread fabric 39, prepared as indicated above but wound into a supply roll 38, is led therefrom and superposed on the previously assembled layers, the complete assembly being then pressed between rolls 40, which may be heated, to form the laminated wiping material. In alternative forms, the grille may be of three or more sets of threads extending in various directions, of parallel spaced threads extending in one direction and a series of parallel, spaced lines of adhesive extending transversely to the threads, or it may consist only of spaced, parallel lines of adhesive, or may be a woven gauze. The local bonding of the internal crepe tissue paper layers may be effected by locallyapplied adhesive, e.g. spaced dots, or adhesive carried on internal reinforcing strands, or by local embossing. The threads forming the whole or part of the grille, or the reinforcing internal threads, may be low twist, multiple filament threads, e.g. of continuous filament rayon or nylon. The adhesive for bonding the cross-laid threads of the grille may be polyethylene or a solution of plasticised polyvinyl acetate. Alternatively, adhesion may be effected by including thermoplastic fibres in one or both sets of yarns which cause adhesion on heating. Adhesive may be sprayed or printed on the absorbent layer or the fibre-faced cross-laid thread webs before'they are brought together. Specification 682,190, [Group VI], is referred to.
