Gateway-location requests from within an administrative domain of a packet-switched network are serviced by gateway location servers to identify a gateway with particular characteristics for passing a call from the packet-switched network to a circuit-switched network. Each server stores gateway data and utilises a tree data structure to interrelate gateways to the numbers they serve. Each node (410-415) of the tree represents a particular number prefix string and may have one or more gateways (A,B,C) associated with it, this association indicating that a gateway gives access to all number with the corresponding number prefix. The tree structure is so populated that the set of gateways, if any, serving the numbers encompassed by the number prefix of a node is constituted by the gateway or gateways identified by the node and the nodes traversed in descending to that node from the root node of the tree structure.
