During manufacture of an organic EL matrix, ribs 9 are formed on an indium tin oxide electrode layer 3 and then the multilayer organic electroluminescent layer 5 and electrode layer 6 are deposited. Providing plural ribs between adjacent pixels ensures insulation. The multilayer electroluminescent layer is preferably CuPc 5(a), a -NPD 5(b) and Alq<SB>3</SB> 5(c).
