PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method, which can stably produce an aminocarbazole in high yield while preventing deteriorated reaction rate, yield or the like by lot of the nitrocarbazole as the stock. SOLUTION: This method is to produce an aminocarbazole by catalytic reduction of the nitrocarbazole, wherein the catalyst is a nickel-based catalyst, activated with an alkali and iron compound in an inert solvent in a hydrogen or inert gas atmosphere. It is preferable that the activated nickel-based catalyst contains the iron compound at 10 to 60 wt.% as the metal, based on the nickel- based catalyst, and that the nitrocarbazole is 1-nitro-9-lower alkyl substituted carbazole and/or 3-nitro-9-lower alkyl substituted carbazole.
