PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To trace the outline of the picture of an article which is image-picked up with a video camera at high speed with a small circuit scale by calculating a direction in which a picture element is connected next with the connected direction of the picture element positioned in the boundary of the article as a reference. SOLUTION: An eight nearby picture element extraction filter 10 outputs eight bit data on a picture element at the boundary of particles. An edge tracing part 12 traces only the picture element positioned at the boundary of the particles. An eight nearby picture element normalizing unit 28 rearranges the bit arrangement, of eight nearby picture element state values stored in an eight nearby picture element memory 11 with the value of an absolute direction register 26 as a reference. A first arithmetic and logic unit 24 executes a prescribed operation and outputs the relative connection direction value of a next boundary. An adder 25 adds the relative connection direction value and an absolute connection direction value stored in the register 26 and outputs a value as the absolute connection direction value of the next boundary. The register 26 outputs a connection code (chain code) 28 which the boundary of the particles shows. |
