PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image reader which can read the color images with high accuracy by means of a monolithic 3-line sensor of a simple constitution. SOLUTION: A color image is formed on the surface of a photodetector means 3 where plural line sensors are placed on the same substrate via a color separation means 2 consisting of a one-dimensional blazed diffraction grating which separates a beam incident from an image forming optical system 1 into plural color beams. Then the color image and the means 3 are vertically scanned and relatively to each other and the means 3 reads the color image. In such a constitution of a color image reader, the difference of image forming positions caused on the surface of the means 3 by the difference of wavelengths of the color beams separated by the means 2 is set to secure the same space among these color beams which are separated in the vertical scanning direction on the surface of the means 3 by causing the eccentricity to at least some of lenses which construct the image forming optical system.
