PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the bill discriminating device which can be manufactured at low cost and efficiently discriminates bills while preventing bill from being jammed inside. SOLUTION: The bill discriminating device 1 is equipped with a bill conveying mechanism 6 which conveys a bill inserted into a bill insertion slot 4 toward a bill discharge opening 5 and discharges it from a bill discharge opening 5 to an outside, a discriminating mechanism 7 which discriminates whether or not the bill is genuine halfway in the conveyance of the bill by the bill conveying mechanism 6, and a control circuit which controls the operation of the bill conveying mechanism 6, and the control circuit controls the bill conveying mechanism 6 so that the bill is discharged from the bill discharge opening 5 to the outside when the bills is identified as a genuine bill by the discriminating mechanism 7 or held at the bill discharge opening 5 while having its conveyance-directional front part exposed to the outside through the bill discharge opening 5 when the bill is identified as a counterfeit.
