PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compensate uneven illumination or an object by providing a shield element or the like that is placed between an illuminated area on the object and a lens so as not to substantially cut light from an area less illuminated. SOLUTION: An optical system 10 is provided with a shield element 54 that is placed between an object 16 and a lens 36, which shields the light from an area 38 brightly illuminated by a predetermined quantity but does not substantially shield the light from an area 40 more darkly illuminated. In the case of using this optical system 10 to form an image of a navigation area that is illuminated under a specific illuminance function, the obtained image appears as if the object were more uniformly illuminated than actually illuminated. Furthermore, the optical system 10 provides a high transmittance to the area 40 that is less illuminated and a reduced tranmsittance to the area 38 that is brightly illuminated so as to compensate in homogeneous illuminance of the object.
