PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to urge a photographer to naturally stand ready for vertical position photographing without being conscious of the direction of a strobe and the direction of a vertical position image by displaying a subject image in the vertically upside down direction when a strobe emitting part is not set up to a suitable position in the vertical position strobe photographing. SOLUTION: An electronic still camera decides whether the state of the camera is a vertical position or a horizontal position, based on a detection result of a vertical/horizontal detection circuit 20, and then decides whether the direction of the strobe emitting part is upward or downward on a vertical position. When the direction is judged as an upward direction, normal position display is executed, and when judged as a downward direction, upside-down position display is executed. Since the strobe emitting part is a downward vertical position in the upside-down position display, a subject is displayed upside down on an EVF monitor 12 so that a photographer does not take a picture in the downward vertical state as it is.
