PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbazole in high yield using an inexpensive reagent by a simple procedure. SOLUTION: This method comprises reacting a 1,1-diaryl hydrazine, shown by the formula R1(R2)N-NAr1(Ar2) (Ar1 and Ar2 are each an aryl group which may be substituted with a functional group; and R1 and R2 are each H, an alkyl, alkoxycarbonyl, or a group which can form a cycloamino or cycloimide group with the adjacent nitrogen atom), with a Lewis acid. It is preferable that the aryl group is phenyl group, and the functional group(s) is (are) 1 to 4 selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, cyano, aryl and a halogen atom.
