PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a crystal of a high-purity quaternary ammonium salt in high yield by reacting a halogenated methylstyrene with a trialkylamine in the presence of an organic solvent. SOLUTION: (A) A halogenated methystyrene represented by formula I (X is Cl, Br or I) (e.g. m-chloromethylstyrene or p-bromomethylstyrene) is reacted with (B) a trialkylamine represented by formula II (R1 to R3 are each methyl or ethyl) (e.g. trimethylamine or triethylamine) in the presence of (C) an organic solvent, e.g. an ester-based solvent (e.g. methyl acetate), a ketonic solvent (e.g. methyl ethyl ketone), an aromatic solvent (e.g. benzene), an ethereal solvent (e.g. diethyl ether) or a celluosolve-based solvent (e.g. methyl cellosolve acetate) to thereby produce a compound represented by formula III (e.g. 4- vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride).
