PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new dialkenyl compound comprising a liquid crystal compound having broad nematic phase temperature range, low threshold voltage and excellent viscosity-reducing effect and giving a liquid crystal composition having high response speed and low driving voltage. SOLUTION: The objective compound is expressed by formula I (R and R' are each H or a 1-5C alkyl; when R and/or R' are alkyl, the adjacent double bond has trans or cis configuration; (m) and (n) are each 2-8 and m<=n; L is CH2=CH2, CH2-CH2 or CH2), e.g. the compound of formula II. The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting an organometallic compound of formula R-CH=CH-(CH2)n-M [M is an organometallic group such as MgCl, Li and B(OH)2] with a compound of formula III (X and Y are each an eliminable group such as Cl, Br, I and trifluoromethanesulfonyl) in the presence of a transition metal catalyst and reacting the resultant compound of formula IV with a compound of formula R'-CH=CH-(CH2)m-M in the presence of a transition metal catalyst.
