PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water base ink-printed matter protecting agent which prevents the outflow of water base ink-printed matter by water and a protection method. SOLUTION: An agent for protecting printed matter printed with a water base ink contains diatomaceous earth containing an oil component. The diatomaceous earth contains 30 wt.% or below of the oil component. Silicone oil, 5-15C petroleum hydrocarbons, fluorine-containing oil, liquid paraffin, and others are used as the oil component. An ultraviolet absorber can be added. In a method for protecting water base ink-printed matter, printed matter is coated with the protecting agent.
