PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend the operating area of a lockup device by regulating the inertial balance of a torque converter having a front cover, an impeller, a turbine, a stator, the lockup device, and an inertial member. SOLUTION: The torque converter 2 comprises a front cover 6, an impeller 13, a turbine 15, a stator 20, a lockup device 25, and an inertial member 39, and it transmits the torque inputted from an engine to a continuously variable transmission through a fluid. The lockup device 25 has a piston 24 and an elastic connecting mechanism 39, and the piston 24 can be pressed in conformation to the friction surface 6a of the front cover 6. The elastic connecting mechanism 39 elastically connects the piston 24 to the turbine 15. The inertia member 39 is fixed to the turbine 15. The operating area of the lockup device 25 can be extended by the mounting of the inertia member 39.
