PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small and inexpensive image pickup unit which uses a free curved lens and yet can perform both zooming and focusing operations with high precision by means of a simple drive mechanism. SOLUTION: This image pickup unit consists of the 1st to 3rd optical members 3 to 5 serving as the free curved lenses where the beams enter through one of both refracting surfaces, are repetitively reflected on the reflecting surfaces and go to the outside through the other refracting surface, a CCD 6 which receives the object beams which passed through the members 3 to 5, a mobile optical frame 2 which holds in a body both 2nd and 3rd optical members 4 and 5 which are concerned in the zooming operations, a 1st drive mechanism which drives the frame 2 and a control circuit 1 which controls the drive of the drive mechanism.
