PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retrieve character information composed of a proper noun and a common noun such as 'ARABAMA STREET' with a simple operation and also with satisfactory accuracy. SOLUTION: A proper retrieving means 13 retrieves character information in which a proper character string matches the retrieval character string of numerical characters inputted by a character inputting means 12 while a database means 11 stores much character information composed of a proper character string and a common character string. Also, a common retrieving means 15 retrieves character information whose common character string is selected by a selection inputting means 14, and a result outputting means 16 outputs the character information retrieved by both two retrieving means 13 and 15.
