PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ultraviolet absorber having excellent compatibility with a plastic and not undergoing bleed out when added to a plastic by selecting 2,2-methylenebis(4-substituted-6-benzotriazolephenol). SOLUTION: This absorber is represented by the formula wherein X and Y are at least one type of groups selected from among -O-COR1, -O-NHCOR2, -O-(CH2CH2-O)m-(CH2-CHR3-O)n-H, and OH, provided at least either of them is not OH; R1 and R2 are each a 6-26C alkyl or a 6-26C alkenyl; R3 is a 1-4C alkyl; and m and n are each 0-50. The plastic is desirably at least one member selected from among polyolefin resins, polyester resins, polyurethane resins, polyamide resins, and polyacrylic resins. A compound of the formula can be produced, for example, by reacting 2,2-methylenebis(4-hydroxyethyl-6- benzotriazolephenol) with an aliphatic carboxylic acid, an aliphatic isocyanate or an alkylene oxide.
