PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a books keeping and controlling device capable of controlling the container so as to minimize the number of containers to be taken out corresponding to the quantity of returned books and of enhancing further the books returning work. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a storing means for obtaining from a container 12 returned to a stack-room the information on a vacant space thereof and for storing this information corresponding to the container 12 and an inputting means for inputting the quantity of books to be stored in the stack-room. Based on the information on the quantity of inputted books and the vacant space of each container 12, the container 12 to be taken out from the stack-room to stations 20, 22 is selected.
