PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound capable of providing a palladium complex having a ligand free from malodor or toxicity as a substitute for phosphorus or arsenic and excellent in stability and catalytic activity and useful as a ligand for palladium complex. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [R1 is a lower alkyl; R2 and R3 are each H or a lower alkyl; and R4 is H, a lower alkyl or a (substituted)lower aralkyl]. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting, e.g. dimethyl oxalate with 2,2-dimethylbutane-3-one in the presence of sodium hydride under argon atmosphere in tetrahydrofuran, successively reacting the synthesized compound of formula II (Me is methyl) with a compound of formula III (R is a lower alkyl or the like) [e.g. (S)-2-amino-3-methyl-1- butanol] and hydrazine in ethanol while heating these compounds under reflux, reacting the synthesized compound of formula IV with thionyl chloride and reacting the reaction product in the presence of compound of the formula NaOMe while heating under reflux.
