PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new optically active compound capable of providing a liquid crystal material manifesting a smectic phase within a wide temperature range and carrying out active element driving. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [R is a 1-20C alkyl or a 1-20C fluoroalkyl; X is COO, a single bond or the like; and R* is an optically active group represented by the formula C*H(CF3)(CH2)mOCnH2n+1 ((m) is 2-5; and (n) is 1-3)], e.g. a 6-(4'-alkyl-4-biphenylmethyloxy)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2- naphthalenecarboxylic acid ester. The compound represented by formula I is obtained as the compound in which X is the single bond by reducing, e.g. a compound represented by formula III with LiAlH4, then reacting the resultant reduction product with HBr, providing a compound represented by formula IV, on the other hand, reacting 6-benzyloxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2- naphthalenecarboxylic acid with an alcohol having the optical activity, affording a 6-benzyloxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-naphthalenecarboxylic acid ester, further reducing the resultant compound with hydrogen in the presence of PdC, providing a compound represented by formula V and then reacting the above compound represented by formula IV with the compound represented by formula V in the presence of potassium carbonate.
