PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable speed type passenger conveyor preventing the breakage of a step tread or the like. SOLUTION: In a variable speed type passenger conveyor in which a like arranged in a rhombic shape is changed due to changes of an interval between guide rails to change an interval between step treads, it consists of a main drive device 1 of the step tread 50 provided in a constant speed region in an intermediate part of a conveyance line and an auxiliary drive device 9 provided in a lower part of a part where the step tread 50 in a return line rises and is inverted, the auxiliary drive device 9 consists of a drive chain 11 stretched around individual sprocket wheels 10a, 10b and a motor 12 for driving the drive chain 11, and a coupling device transmitting power by the friction of a friction plate is provided on a rotary shaft of the motor 12.
