PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely detect parentheses in a specific direction in a specified block area. SOLUTION: The parenthesis detecting method has a 1st step for finding a range wherein a specific color continues by lines in a block area, a 2nd step for deciding whether or not there are one or more ranges for one line, a 3rd step for finding the center points of the ranges, and a 4th step for deciding whether or not the center line connecting the center points is in a mountain shape, and the presence of parentheses in the specified block area is detected when only one range is present for one line and the center line connecting the center points is in a mountain shape.
