The impedance compensation switching technique has a number of impedance coils (B1 to Bn) which can be connected between neutral (N) of a three phase system and earth. A number of switching modules (CT1 to CTn) are connected to the impedances each having two contacts (CT11, CT12 to CTn1,CTn2) Each contact set switches one of the impedance values into the neutral to ground circuit, allowing the impedance setting to be changed in steps.
