A storage battery comprising a number of cells having a common cover c is provided with an additional hollow cover formed of two strips a, b, the strip b having a number of holes corresponding to sockets in the cover c. A vent plug d is situated in each of the holes in the strip b, the plugs also extending into the sockets in the cover c. Each plug is divided by a partition d<SP>1</SP> having a baffle d<SP>2</SP> to prevent acid from splashing into the plug. The upper end of the plug is concave and is provided with two holes d<SP>3</SP> through which acid carried over in the escaping gas returns to the battery. Baffles b<SP>1</SP> are also provided integral with the strip b to intercept any acid tending to escape into the atmosphere through the open ends a<SP>3</SP> of the hollow cover. The battery is topped up by lifting the cover a, b, thereby removing all the cell plugs which remain attached to the strip b. |
