At least two subscribers of the network (4) can exchange data, without the use of a master structure (1), such that they provide suitable data memories (7,12), using a master protocol structure. The memories use special slaves (11,13) in the ring as a data source or sink. A slave (5) is brought into the ring structure to communicate bidirectionally with further slaves. The slaves also provide a memory (12) for data from the incorporated slave. Thus a transverse traffic is permitted without further activity of the master.
