The invention relates to polypeptide variants with raised heparin-binding capacity. Said raised heparin-binding capacity is achieved by the addition, insertion and/or substitution of an amino acid sequence X1, X2, X3, X4, X6 (SEQ ID no. 1 or no. 2). The polypeptide variants provided for in the invention are particularly suitable for the stimulation of chondrogenesis, osteogenesis and wound healing. The invention also relates to nucleic acid molecules coding for said polypeptide variants, host cells containing the nucleic acid molecules and methods for producing the polypeptide variants.
